Just this morning while I was speaking with one of the mobile CPI account executives I work with, it dawned on me that there is a very specific skillset needed to be a successful mobile CPI marketer.
You see I was giving some feedback on communication that could be improved to increase performance.
And she was talking about the mindset of a performance driven person to a salaried rep.
And if you don’t do any performance marketing this may look like Chinese so I will briefly explain.
If you only get paid by commission you pay more attention to everything you need to get the job done. You have no time for incoherent definitions and requirements.
Sometimes you will work with people essential to your business that don’t get paid by commission, they are getting a corporate salary, and they are less driven to provide you with everything you could possibly need to run campaign to the max.
Meaning have the highest ROI as fast as possible.

People Skills Required
Lot’s of marketers believe that you can make good money with CPA marketing on your own, in a little virtual bubble, not having to deal with anyone.
They are dead wrong.
If you treat your promotion as a business, you should constantly work on business development.
That means creating and cultivating connections with people both on the advertising network side and the traffic network side.
Notice I said people?
People do business with people.
If you don’t take the time to create real connections and be a little social your business will not grow as to it’s full potential.
You see you will need to negotiate with people.
And if no one knows who you are or has any level of trust with you – forget about getting the best offers or be able to negotiate the best payouts or prices.
No one will do you any solid’s and you won’t be able to reciprocate and grow your network and as a direct result – make more money.
Get Over Your Tech Hurdles
For the longest time the one thing holding me back from scaling my mobile marketing business was tracking and the tech that goes with it.
And it can be daunting to have to learn how to set up a world of hardware and tracking software and practices…
So if tech is holding you back, take a deep breath and get it done. Either hire someone to set everything up for you and train you or simply ask a lot of questions and get help along the way.
But get it done. Don’t let tech hold you back. It can make all the difference to your bottom line.
Pay Attention to Details or Perish
I know this sounds boring but wait! Details can seem boring at times but they are essential to your financial success.
It’s getting through the details on a daily basis that enables you to take a wonderful vacation with your family at the end of the day.
Sometimes you will need to educate other people on the details you need to get the best results for everyone.
So don’t be shy, the worst that will happen is someone may say no, they can’t provide it… but some will!
So what kind of details should you be paying attention to?
- Offer payouts
- Traffic prices across networks
- Demographic, carrier and device targeting for offers
- Site IDs / names of apps / pub ids that convert for specific offer types per geo
- Traffic Network combinations appropriate per offer type
- Traffic quality level
- KPI requirement
- Optimization (critical)
- Cost of scale and breakeven points
- Leverage points for negotiating caps or payouts
- Conversion reports
- How big is the budget and how much is left
- data, data and some more data
Think Out of the Box
If you do exactly the same thing every time you will not discover new golden pockets of success.
One thing people say about me is that I think out of the box. I like to try new things and test out different targeting ideas.
What can you do with this?
Approach a campaign with new eyes and don’t forget to research and brainstorm. You may surprise yourself with how many different ideas you can come up with.
Try different kinds of offers. You never know where you can discover a success app campaign or any other mobile CPA offer.
Sure you should focus on learning as much possible about the vertical you are good at or have chosen, but don’t be afraid to expand your reach and try new things.
Simply put speed matters.
How fast you can identify, negotiate and implement testing offers can sometimes make a huge difference in your profitability.
You are not alone in this mobileverse.
You have competition, budgets and targets change, campaign come up and down at lightning speed.
