Myth: Marketing with Video Online Video is Expensive
Some very effective campaigns cost little or no money.
A significant proportion of online promotional videos are based on slideshows, animation, screen captures with mp3 voice tracks. You don’t need a $5000 camera and you don’t need a $2000 video editing software package to get started.
In this digital age you have a huge advantage over professional production companies. You can easily re shoot your video endless times before you are happy with the results without going bankrupt.
It certainly doesn’t cost $1000’s an hour to mess around in the backyard in front of a video camera or 3G phone.
With the rise of social networking sites such as YouTube and Facebook anyone can load hundreds of hours of promotional content to the internet for virtually nothing.
Even private video hosting has become alarmingly cheap.
Most Videos are not Live Action
In the grand scheme of online videos you may have noticed that that many videos online are not live action (which can be significantly more costly to make). Rather, they are animated or slideshow presentations accompanied either by a simple music track or a voice soundtrack.
Although this may sound intimidating, slideshow and animated videos are very simple to make and require very little technical skill. Of course you can outsource your videos if you have zero tech ability.
Here are a few examples:
Parisian Love – This video ad was created using a screen capture program and was very inexpensive to make.
The Amazon Kindle Video embedded in the Kindle product sales page is nothing more than a slide presentation video with a simple audio soundtrack.
Popular Online Video Types
There are three main ways that people create cheap videos to market online. Keep this in mind: Cheap and amateur videos can be just as effective, if not more, than polished and expensive productions.
Popular online video formats
The approach you take is sometimes called a production format. The four most commonly used video production formats for the internet are:
1. Slideshow Presentation Videos
These simple and inexpensive videos are based on a Slideshow presentation, animated to create a video, along with your audio soundtrack. You can make a slideshow presentation video in a couple of hours, providing you know what you want to say!
2. Animated Videos
Let’s face it, people love animations. They always add a cool and fun effect and are generally entertaining. They can capture your viewer and keep them watching the fast pace of on screen motion.
Here is an example of an animation video that cost me virtually nothing, took me just 5 minutes to make and generated over 25,000 views:
At times animated effects may be added to video intros, live action videos or even screen captures but stand alone animated videos are very effective marketing tools.
To create a video just like the ZhuZhu pet video above all you need are some images and a subscription to Animoto.
3. Screen Capture Videos
Screen capture is just as it sounds, images and or sound captured directly from your computer screen and microphone.
Here is an example of a short screen capture video –
Training and informational videos are often presented through screen capture. These provide a “look over my shoulder feel”. The power of showing your viewers how to complete an action from start to finish is powerful and motivating. Screen capture videos are perfect for software demos, educational videos and even video training products.
Getting proficient with some of these simple video types will open up a world of opportunities for your online promotion!
