How Can You Make a Kindle Audio Book?
If you are publishing with Kindle you can easily make Kindle audiobooks and have them distributed on Audible.com, Amazon.com, and iTunes.
You may be wondering what is so special about these new Kindle audiobooks. Well They are transferred to Kindle devices using Amazon’s new Whispersync for Voice functionality which allows readers to switch between reading a Kindle book and listening to the corresponding, audiobook across devices.
Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD devices also support the new Immersion Reading feature, which allows you to listen to the audio as the text of the corresponding eBook is highlighted on the screen. Of course best of all is the the audio picks up where you left off reading (or listening) as appropriate to Kindle books.
Audible.com (an amazon Subsidiary) partnered with ACX to provide a platform for audio book production and publishing. You are not limited to Kindle books and can also publish your audio books elsewhere yourself, though ACX makes it more attractive to publish exclusively with them. Exclusive AXC publishing still gets your book out to the three mega platforms – iTunes, Amazon and Audible.com.
If you already have an audio book for sale on Audible.com you can contact them to see whether you can get your book synched with ACX.
What Books Should NOT Become Audiobooks?
ACX warns publishers from creating audiobooks from the following material as these types of books usually don’t do well in the audiobook arena:
- Abridged audiobooks
- Audio products that include advertising messages
- Books in the Public Domain
- Reference books, guide books, quotation books, and dictionaries
- Books about home and garden, interior design, home organization, or storage
- Gift books and other short illustrated books
- Cookbooks and diet books
- Comic books and graphic novels
- Photography books or art monographs
- Engineering or other professional reference books
- Flashcards, calendars, and box sets
- Sports books (especially ones that rely heavily on pictures)
- Travel guides (especially ones that read as reference guides)
They do recommend audiobook conversion for fictional books and podcasts.
Most nonfiction books do NOT make good candidates for audiobooks!
Producing Kindle Audio Book
Producing a high quality audiobook is more complicated than you may think. You need to get the audio quality right as well as speak at a pace most listeners can follow. In addition you will need to be able to edit your soundtrack and produce a polished finished file.
Now you may be thinking this is out of your reach, and perhaps narration is not the best use of your voice. Have no fear. The ACX model opens up opportunities to authors, narrators and sound techs to collaborate on a project and profit. Of course if you can do most of the production yourself you will end up making more money per sale. You can watch instructional videos on the different set ups you will need to to create audiobooks here.
Of course I believe it is worth trying to do it yourself if your voice is half decent. Sometimes there is an advantage to having the author read out their book. See the specifications for creating an audiobook track yourself with ACX here
The ACX opportunity is currently available only for US citizens. See more about their Qualifications for the Audiobook License and Distribution Agreement here.
