What! Gmail Changed Again?
If you are using Gmail as your email account you probably noticed a massive change in the way your inbox looks. Specifically the new Gmail Categories.
There has been a lot of hype, mass hysteria and disinformation about this new change so read on to get the real scoop on what this means, how to work with the new changes without loosing email deliver-ability as well as how to disable the Gmail categories if you so choose.
What are the new Gmail Inbox Categories?
According to Google the new inbox categories are:
Messages from friends and family, as well as any other messages that don’t appear in other tabs.
Your deals, offers, and other promotional emails.
Messages from social networks, media-sharing sites, online dating services, gaming platforms, and other social websites.
Notifications such as confirmations, receipts, bills, and statements.
Messages from online groups, discussion boards, and mailing lists.
Now here’s the catch, Google is sorting your messages into these categories for you based on one of their super duper algorithms. So chances are you have many messages you may not notice since they are hidden somewhere you did not intend.
How to Reconfigure your Inbox Category Email Messages
Choosing Which Categories to Use in Your Gmail Inbox
You can use all or some of the new Gmail inbox category tabs as you see fit. To change the new default simply go to the gear icon on the top left side of your inbox and select “configure inbox”.
You will then receive the Select Tabs to Enable screen as seen below. Simply select which tabs you want to include in your Gmail inbox. If you want to disable the new inbox categories completely select only the primary option…
I highly recommend on including starred items in your primary folder. That way if you see a message that is wrongly placed in a different Gmail tab all you need to do is mark it with a star to move to your primary tab (super simple!)
How to Move Messages Between Gmail Tab Categories
first I recommend on visiting the Promotions category tab and combing through it. Any newsletter you subscribed to will likely be automatically placed here, and if you subscribed, you are probably interested in receiving these emails to your primary tab and labeling it if necessary.
To move an email between categories simply drag and drop it into the other tab or right-click a message while viewing your inbox.
After you move a message to a different tab, a message above your inbox will ask if you want to undo that action or choose to always put messages from that sender in the tab you chose.
Instructing Your Newsletter Subscribers on How to Receive Your Messages to Their Primary Tab
If you publish a newsletter or have an email auto-responder system your broadcast messages are likely to land in your subscriber’s promotions tab.
To avoid ensure your subscribers are aware of your emails, make sure to include some instructions on their first follow up email on how to either star your messages or move them to their primary folder so they don’t miss out!
In Summary; The Sky is Not Falling
Now that you are a Gmail inbox category tabs whiz, you can clearly see the sky is not falling, and there is no need for mass hysteria! Take the time to reconfigure your inbox and spread the word about the new changes and how to deal with them!
