Every year there are awards for online advertising. The Webbys, the Facebook Awards, the Shortys, and the Mashies are all big awards events to celebrate advertising. Take a look at some of the winning campaigns from last year to see how you can channel the same award-winning creativity and positivity that led to these winning strategies!
Last year the Webby for best digital campaign went to HBOGo for their TV spots that centered around the awkwardness of watching racy HBO content with the whole family. While the TV spots were the core of the campaign and you likely don’t have access to the same resources as HBO, there are still some key takeaways from the campaign. It tapped into a universal, resonant, funny truth that’s instantly relatable. Everyone knows that awkward moment when a parent tries to make small talk over a love scene to ease tension. It’s the worst. By focusing on that aspect of their service and targeting the specific family unit, HBOGo was very successful.
The Mashie last year went to Burger King for their Australian campaign that involved transforming a seedy motel into a place where customers could have a liaison with their new chicken burger. The idea was that customers could go there to “cheat on” the Whopper. It’s a clever and funny campaign, but the key is that Burger King started getting online buzz about the campaign before they even launched the full campaign itself. They got celebrities and other people with big online follower bases to get involved early. By riling up the fan base early it ensured that the most people would see the campaign as possible.
The Shorty for best contest or promotion went to Havas Worldwide Chicago for their intern draft. Every six months the company hires new interns, but this time they gave potential interns the chance to prove why they’re better for the job than current employees. Havas used the brilliant hashtag #iamheretotakeyourjob to launch an all-out war between current employees and interns. What’s beautiful about the campaign is that it doesn’t sell anything, but has an exciting element that gets lots of people involved.
