Why you Need an SEO Keyword Strategy
In this article I aim to help both beginners and skilled SEOs select the right keywords and understand what an SEO keyword strategy is all about.
Keywords are the foundation of your online business. Keywords are the heart of your SEO campaign. Your keywords will appear everywhere, from your titles to your copy. So in reality your choice of keywords will affect almost everything you do online. You might consider having an SEO keyword strategy…
Do you have an SEO Keyword Strategy?
If you didn’t know it already, the top three listings get a huge share of the clicks and most of those clicks go to the number one listing. Now, with the new Google Instant, you really need to appear in the top 3 results to exist, since Google displays the search query results while your customer types.
This means that it can often be more profitable to get to number one listing for a lower volume search term, than to exhaust all of your resources, slowly climbing (taking months or even years!) to the top of the rankings for higher volume and more competitive search terms.
Keyword strategy is deciding which keyword and search result page you want to appear on (to rank).
Identifying profitable keywords to target, and knowing how to prioritizing going after them is important to your bottom line!
Knowing which pages from your sites you want visitors to land on when they click on the search results is also affected hugely by your proper use of keywords.
Ultimately you need to decide which keywords are going to be most profitable for you to start with and which might take a little more work.
Keyword Selection Factors To Keep In Mind
The image on the left taken from sitepoint.com is a good representation of the different keyword selection factors you might want to take into account when creating your keyword strategy.
Obviously, relevancy and business value are the most important factors in keyword selection.
And it makes sense if you think about it. After all your primary goal is to attract your visitors to complete your action of choice on your website (buy, register etc’)
Search trends are constantly changing and can’t be ignored. Your keyword strategy needs to remain current and you will have to revisit it periodically.
Keep in mind that sometimes a lower volume keyword can result in more conversions on your site.
Your First SEO Keyword Strategy is Based on Evaluation Not Experience!
Beware! Volume and competition number don’t always reflect reality! Once you begin to test your keywords you will find that some don’t behave as you would like them to. The strength of the competition cannot be taken for granted.
It’s a dog eat dog world and you may find that some competitors don’t even notice when you grab their rankings. Others may be very passionate. Always keep in mind how much time and effort it is really taking to get your rankings.
Simply put, what will it take to outrank them?
Well that’s another story…
Work Smarter Not Harder
For now; keep in mind that no SEO Keyword selection strategy is bullet proof. It is often a process of trial an error. Minimizing errors and shortening the amount of time that it takes to evaluate whether a keyword is effective and worthy of your resources is what you want to focus on.
