Recently I spoke with a good friend, he works full time in his day job and provides Internet Marketing consulting services at night.
With the economy down in the dumps and his job hanging by a thread, he is taking the initiative to build an alternate online business.
Problem is; people smell his hunger.
When I was young my neighbor’s child was petrified of dogs. It was surreal. For the life of me I couldn’t understand why.
This kid had never been bitten or attacked by a dog.
Dogs all over the neighborhood could sense her fear.
Every time she saw a dog her fear level would rise. Dogs would sense her fear and become aggressive.
Then she would become more timid and the dog would become even more aggressive.
It was a vicious cycle.
The same goes for people.
A show of fear or hunger is an invitation to everyone to try to get something from you for free.
My friend is very skilled at the services he provides. Unfortunately he is attracting the wrong people to his business.
Wasting his time on freebies and reinforcing the bad attitude.
If I do this well they might pay me…
I don’t have a contract, but I am sure this will bring in a testimonial or reference…
This type of mindset is what I call a poor mindset.
My friend is afraid that if he stands up for what he deserves, his clients will drop him.
Hmmm, are these really the type of clients he wants?
Probably not, but hunger and desperation can make us all do some pretty crazy things.
My Advice to Hungry Internet Marketing Consultants
- Believe in Yourself!
- Believe in the quality and value you provide!
- Don’t be afraid to say no!
If you don’t make a change, don’t expect to attract different clients…
Albert Einstein defined insanity as;
“doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”
Now imagine you tell these freebie seekers that you do not work for free. There are only two possibilities:
1. They will walk and try to find someone else willing to work for free
2. They will negotiate payment (now this is what we call business!)
Sure, you should give people some free content, and tips to show your expertise and generally help people, but come on guys, do you really want to work for free for the rest of your life?
